Apple iPhone 4

Today I wanted to download few pictures and videos from my phone - Apple iPhone 4. The product gives an impression of something very nice and slick. Really nice and responsive touch screen, a lot of memory, fast processor, and other things make this phone appear to be really good item to own.

Imagine a baking oven that is very comfortable to use, that bakes really nice cakes, quickly. Then, imagine this... you can't take the perfectly baked cake out of that oven - you can only send it to someone, share with the whole word, but you can't take it out and store it in a fridge just for yourself. Pretty bizarre, and yes, iPhone is exactly like that.

I made several really nice videos on that phone in 720p resolution. Taking the videos was very easy - just start the app, press a button and here you go - recording starts. Press a button again, and it's ready. Then you plug the phone to your computer and... and... and... nothing. Video won't download. There's an option to share it with the whole world, a.k.a. upload it to YouTube. There's an option to send a compressed version through email. But there's no option to download it on your own computer. The "Movies" folder on iTunes is empty, even if you check the sync checkbox.

I did some googling and I found that there are 3rd party applications that might help you with the task, but they always come at a price - risking downloading a virus, having to pay $20 or getting a bunch of ad software on your machine. So 3rd party applications aren't the slick solution for the slick device.

Why did Apple limit the device from such a basic functionality - taking the cake out of the oven? I have no idea. Someone wrote that Apple is trying to protect the copyrights of the author. That's an interesting take - I recorded a video with my phone, so I am an author and I cannot copy it on my computer, yet I send email it to someone or share it with the whole world on YouTube. Yes, it is very protective against myself, the author, for sure.

If anyone knows more details about this limitation, please comment.
